Guide: Make your own sets

Spend a weekend in practice, follow along these pointers and make your own setup for fast laps – one that suits you more than the meta.

BRAKING

  1. When the front of the car is unstable during braking, the brake bias should be increased towards the rear and the front rebound should be softened.
  2. If the car spins while braking, the rear negative camber should be increased. Additionally, the rear anti-roll bar and the rear rebound dampers should be softened and the brake bias should be moved to the front.
  3. If the car bottoms out during braking, the solution is to stiffen the front suspension.
  4. If the front tires lock up, the front suspension should be softened.

HANDLING

  1. If the car is sluggish and unresponsive, increase the tire pressures, stiffen the bump dampers, the suspension, the rebound dampers, and the anti-roll bars. It might also be beneficial to decrease downforce.
  2. When the car bottoms out frequently, the suspension should be stiffened.
  3. To make the car change direction more quickly, the anti-roll bars should be stiffened.
  4. If the car’s ride is unpredictable with sliding, tire pressures should be reduced and the suspension should be softened.

CORNERING

  1. If the car understeers when exiting a corner, the rear ride height should be increased and the front rebound should be softened.
  2. To prevent the car from rolling on corner entry, the front suspension should be stiffened.
  3. To improve grip when cornering, the anti-roll bars should be softened.
  4. If the car understeers when turning into a corner, increase the downforce at the front, stiffen the front bump damper, reduce the positive camber at the front, and reduce the front tire pressure.
  5. When the car oversteers on turning in, the rear rebound damper should be stiffened, the downforce at the rear should be increased, and the positive rear toe angle should be reduced.
  6. If the car oversteers on exiting a corner, increase downforce at the rear, reduce negative camber at the rear, and soften both the rear suspension and the rear anti-roll bar.

ACCELERATION

  1. If the car oversteers and the wheels spin when accelerating, the rear suspension and the rear anti-roll bar should be softened.
  2. If the car is twitchy with little feedback and stability, increase the downforce to the rear, soften the suspension, the anti-roll bars, and the rebound dampers, decrease the positive toe angle at the rear, and soften the bump dampers.
  3. If the car is unstable on straights, increase the rear downforce compared to the front, increase the negative toe angle at the rear, and decrease the positive toe angle at the front.
  4. If the car becomes unstable under hard acceleration, reduce the negative toe angle at the rear.
  5. If the car accelerates poorly when exiting a corner, reduce the rear tire pressure, soften the anti-roll bars and the rear rebound damper, choose a lower traction control setting, and adjust the gearing ratios.
  6. If the car is unstable over bumps, stiffen the bump dampers at the front or rear and soften the front anti-roll bar.
  7. If the front of the car becomes erratic over bumps, stiffen the anti-roll bars.
